Mauro Libi Crestani: Top tips on creative thinking as a powerful business tool

Do you remember playing the word association game? What is the first thing that comes to mind in response to 'creativity?' For most people it is probably 'art' or something similar, it is probably never 'business.'

Creativity is not simply the preserve of the artist. It is something built into everyone, even the businessperson! Thinking creatively is a powerful business tool that can help businesses exploit new opportunities and solve problems, all of which can result in improved profitability.

Mike Waddell of Adsidia offers tips on creative thinking as a tool to help you generate new thinking in your business.

Edward de Bono, of 'lateral thinking' and 'Six Thinking Hats' fame, observed that the human mind is a very efficient pattern making and matching system. The problem is that our minds are lazy. This means that we tend to force fit new scenarios to old patterns instead of making new ones. De Bono called this 'cliché thinking.' These clichés include our responses and so we inherently limit our ability to exploit new opportunities.

The question is how can we break through the clichés to benefit our business? This in essence is what creative thinking is about - it is the process of finding new perspectives and developing new thinking.

Change the question!

As cliché thinking limits us, it is important to find new ways of looking at problems within a business. Broadening and rephrasing a problem is an important tool. For instance, a business problem might be expressed as "we cannot cover our costs," which leads to a demoralising cost cutting exercise. If you broaden the problem into: "we are not making enough money to cover our costs," this leads to a restatement such as: "how can we make more money?" A whole set of optimistic questions then emerge to help deal with the situation. Broadening and rephrasing problem statements are powerful cliché breaking actions.

'Object forcing' method helps you to think outside the box

Having a good problem statement starts the process but sometimes it is difficult to generate new thinking. 'Object forcing' is one of a number of tools that helps to initiate and maintain creative thinking.

The idea is to take any object and consider how that object might affect the solution. Fun ideas are encouraged because the exercise is about generating new thinking.

Problem: The company is using too many elastic bands.

Unrelated object: A crab!

What solution could the crab create?

You can look at the characteristics of the unrelated object and see how they may affect the situation, for example, the crab has an armoured shell - so the elastic bands could be kept in a secure container.

'Object forcing' is most effective in a brain-storming mode, but remember not to evaluate or criticise ideas until the session is completed. The ideas can then be reviewed and developed, and associations can be investigated. Remember, this is not simply about the ideas that arise from object forcing; it is about breaking the cliché. You can develop fun new ways of looking at problems that energise your workforce and stimulate creativity.

Try the above techniques for approaching new opportunities within your business. Who knows, your business may become the next Google.

Mauro Libi Crestani: Positive attitude brings positive results

A typical day at work may not be what you would want a typical day to be. Just the way that last sentence is worded makes it sound negative.  There is an old joke about a mom waking her son up one morning to go to school.  The son tells his mom that he doesn't want to go to school.  He tells his mom that all the teachers  hate him and the kids make fun of him and that he hates going to school. His mom tells him "Son, you are forty two years old, you are the principle of the school and you have to go ."

Your typical morning may have so many problems presented to you. Everyone in the office may be so stressed out. The problems may seem so overwhelming that you push it off for another day. Meanwhile stress builds up. All the employees feel depressed and negative. No one feels like the  ignored problems can be solved.

For a business to succeed, you and your workers have to first want to show up to work. You want every employee including yourself when they wake up in the morning to really want to go to work.  To look forward to going. You want every member of your team to feel like a winner and like the company is a winner.  You need to create a positive attitude. Positive attitude brings positive results through hard work and through every member of the team looking for ways to improve the company.  That will not happen if everyone gave up on the company.

It has to be more than just an attitude. The companies problems can not be ignored. They have to be faced and discussed and together as a team to look for solutions. As you begin to face your real problem areas and find your solutions, with a proper go win it for the team attitude then your work place will be a more profitable and fun place to be.

Mauro Libi Crestani: The benefits of positive thinking and or positive attitude

There  has always been a debate about the benefits of positive thinking and or positive attitude. Some believe that it is just an internal good feeling that in reality do not benefit a person at all. Well, the students at Harvard university seem to disagree with that critique of positive thinking. Harvard’s Positive Psychology 1504, taught by professor Tal Ben-Shahar (PhD), will enter the history books as the most popular course in the history of Harvard University. A course taught at Harvard on the effects of Positive attitude and it is Harvard's most popular course ever given.

This course is about the psychological aspects of life fulfillment and flourishing, by teaching about empathy, friendship, love, achievement, creativity, spirituality, happiness, and humor. Tal Ben-Shahar received his PHD in Organizational Psychology.  In 2011, Ben-Shahar joined Angus Ridgway to confound Potentialife, a leadership development program that uses science to help organizations develop ideal leadership behaviour s and to bring positive psychology into daily lives.

Ann Harbison said "Never let a good crisis go to waste." She expressed the dea that things do not always happen for the best, but a positive person makes the best from what happens.

Patrick Callegham  is a strong believer that exercise is beneficial to mental health, it reduces anxiety and depression and negative mood and it increases self esteem and cognitive functioning. Exercise can increase your productivity at work and your enjoyment in life. it can also keep you healthier and decrease sick days for a business.

Dr Tal Ben-Shahar talks about being our personal best is a work in progress through our lives by working on our self esteem and health of body and mind. Which business would not benefit from employees who perform at their very best

Mauro Libi Crestani: Actitud positive at the work place is important for the success

Keeping a positive attitude at the work place is very important for the success and survival of the company. One bad apple (employee) can bring down the spirits and enthusiasm of the entire work force, so it is very important to recognize a bad attitude or an employee with depression.
Here are some facts. At any one time, 1 employee in 20 is experiencing depression. In 1989, depression cost the nation  more than $17 billion due to time lost from work. There is no way to estimate the total cost of lost productivity. Clinical depression affects the total person―body, feelings, thoughts and behaviors―and comes in various forms. Some people have a single bout of depression; others suffer recurrent episodes. Still others experience the severs mood swings of bipolar disorder―sometimes called manic-depressive illness―with moods alternating between depressive lows and manic highs.

A company that can quickly pick up when an employee has depression can save itself a lot of money and have a much happier and productive staff of employees. It is therefore important to know the signs of depression. Here are some signs that can be easily noticed. Decreased productivity
Morale problems
Lack of cooperation
Safety risks, accidents
Absenteeism
Frequent statements about being tired all the time
Complaints of unexplained aches and pains
Alcohol and/or drug abuse

If any of these signs are persistent for several weeks, it is time to request professional help for this employee. More than 80% of employees with clinical depression can be treated without missing any work.

It is also very important to know how to approach an employee and talk about their depression and bring up the subject of them getting help. Never forget, that both in the work place and in your personal life, attitude does matter.

Mauro Libi Crestani: Good leader has the ability to do great things

A good leader is one who has the ability to do great things. he is very successful at what he does, he may even be the best at what he does. He also knows that he is the best. he believes in his own abilities to succeed and he is a just loaded with positive energy. His attitude toward himself and his attitude toward his job are so positive that everyone around him feels this positive energy and they also feel positive that he will shine at what he does and they know what an asset he is to the company.

Despite all of his wonderful successes and his record breaking wins he is just okey, good at best. he is not a great leader and he will not make a great manager. A great manager is a person that not only has everything we already spoke about but he teaches his coworkers and his employees how to fell like winners also. A good leader has positive energy. A really great leader knows how to transfer that energy to others.

Imagine a football coach that is truly great at what he does, but his team does not believe that they can win. His team believes that couch really knows his stuff but that they do not have the skills to turn couches advice into a win. Now, instead imagine, a football couch that teaches his team the skills they need to use his information. In addition to teaching those skills, he makes them feel all winners. They have the skill and believe that they can win every game.

What this couch did, the couch who is a great leader, was that he transferred his knowledge and skill and his positive attitude to his entire team. Now his players believe that their couch is a genius at game strategy and he has the team to carry out those plays to success and wins.

Mauro Libi Crestani: Never quite, see your self as a winner

There are times when we feel like giving up. It seems like nothing is going our way and that the situation is bleak if not hopeless. It is times like these, it is important to stay positive.

Abraham Lincoln was a chronic depressive. He suffered from depression his whole life. If you see his early life you can understand why. He was born into poverty. He lost eight elections. He failed twice in business. He also suffered a nervous breakdown.

Yet despite all his loses, he never quite. He saw himself as a winner and was always positive. Imagine that, a chronic depressive who had a positive attitude.

After losing a senate race, Abraham Lincoln commented,"The path was worn and slippery. My foot slipped from under me, knocking the other one out of the way, but I recovered and said to myself. It is a slip and not a fall."

After this race, Mr Lincoln went on to become our greatest president.

Abraham Lincoln had his own half cup- half empty saying and it shows his very positive character. "We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses."

Mauro Libi Crestani: Pessimism can lead to hopelessness and failure

Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you are right.” Henry ford believed in the power of positive thinking. He believed that your thinking and your attitude affected the outcome. if you had negative thinking and did not believe that you would succeed then you would end off in failure. When you think positively, you will almost always find more solutions. When you are optimistic, you believe there is a solution to be found, and you free your mind to devise those solutions. Pessimism can lead to hopelessness and failure.

“Don't find fault, find a remedy; anybody can complain”   was another quote from Henry Ford. When Henry Ford wanted to start his automobile company he met with at least two failures and he lost his investors. They had lost their faith in him, but he did not lose his faith in himself. He had learned from his mistakes and was on his way to amazing success. “Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals.” , said Henry Ford.. Henry said that his early failures were a blessing. He learned from them, he learned things that he would not have looked for had it not been for his failures.

"In fact, it is a curse to have everything go right on your first attempt." What  a different attitude this quote from Mr Ford expressed than most of us have towards failure. His lesson was not to get overconfident, learn from your mistakes, and as long as you learn they are just a tool toward your final successful goal.

Mauro Libi Crestani: Being positive and have a positive attitude

Some things are just a bad idea and were not meant to be. Being positive and having a positive attitude and positive thinking does not mean that you believe that every idea that you ever will have is a correct one. Some times having confidence in yourself means that you know when to quite. It is being self assured and strong enough to quit when you have failed at a task.

Sony technologies, we all will agree is a very successful company. Akio Morita, who was the founder of Sony knew that he would succeed. He started his company making a rice cooker, that was terrible, It burned the rice and was a total failure. He gave up on this idea quickly and admitted his mistake. Never be afraid to cut your losses and move on from an objectively bad idea or situation. Have the confidence that a bad idea or several bad ideas or failures does not make you a failure. A positive person moves on and learns from his mistakes to eventually find his win. Akio Morita had a saying, "If you never had a failure then you never tried anything new."

Successful people like Akio Morita and the Sony company did not look at failure more than anything but a stepping stone to success. They knew that they would succeed even when they failed. That first failure did not stop him from building a multi billion dollar company.

Akio was very positive, you had to be a positive person to make the following statement about his companies new products, "It had to be something different, something that nobody else was making." The company had the belief that even when something was impossible and everyone told you that it was impossible, that you had to be so positive that you knew otherwise.

Mauro Libi Crestani: Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind

Christian Lawson wrote a book called , 'Your forces and how to use them". “Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. Look at the sunny side of everything & and make your optimism come true. Think only of the best, work only for the best. Forget the mistakes of the past & press on the greater achievements of the future. Give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. Live in the faith that the whole world is on your side as long as you are true to the best that is in you.”

He was a African American pastor and he believed that you had to have a positive view of yourself and everything that you did in life had to come from a positive perspective. You had to change your mind sent to one of total positivity to be successful. he believed that you had a certain power that came from being self confident. even if you are at the bottom and down on your luck, you have to tell yourself, that you will be successful and that you will make it to the top.

if you were to accept all the negative talk that others may say about you and if you believed it , then all would be lost.

He strongly believed that 300 years ago when the black slaves were brought to this country that they were brought up with the concept that they were slaves and not as good as anyone else. Their own self view, which they were taught  held them back. When the black community knows and believes that they can be anything they want and can achieve anything they want then they will have a power  be successful. He wanted to go into the poor neighborhoods and build self esteem. people from the ghetto had to stop believing the lies that they were not as good as those from the rich community. that they could succeed in school and in business.

Mauro Libi Crestani: Colonel Sanders' exemple of positive attitude

At the age of ten Colonel Sanders was fired from a job and told by his boss,"Your not worth a doggone boy". Back then, the belief was that telling s child the truth about how inadequate they were would give them incentive to settle for a lesser job or skill, which matched their lack of a talent. His mother would tell him,"I am afraid that you are just no good. I guess I will never be able to count on you".

For most of his life, the Colonel worked low skilled jobs. He never believed that he could amount to much. He even had one job where he cleaned cigaret ashtrays. At the age of sixty five he worked twelve hours a day pumping gas. But his perception changed. He would eat fried chicken at restaurants and it always tastes like toothpaste to him. He believed that he had the best recipe. He believed that he had what it took to sell the most and best fried chicken he believed in himself. He developed a very positive attitude.

It was not easy. He went to 1009 restaurants and everyone one said "NO!" to his recipe. A few years later he sold his stores for two million dollars. That was seventy years ago.
"Don't quite at sixty five. Maybe your boat hasn't come in yet, mine didn't".  That was a quote from Colonel Sanders. He was broke at sixty five but he had a positive attitude and as a result his life changed.

Mauro Libi Crestani: The word success is there only in the dictionary?

A young reader of my blogs said that in his personal experience, he understood that success was only a word was in the dictionary, and apparently - according to their perception-had only a linguistic meaning. He also told me that he found it "interesting" that I considered my father as "a successful man".

Secret-of-success1
Certainly there are many people who have the same perception of the success that the young reader. For years they have perceived the victory as something that does not exist and have not received information about the true nature of success, as individuals, as entrepreneurs and as a society.

Since I'm not an expert in these matters, I just dedicate myself to write my opinion on such issues, I suggest you review the dictionary definition of success, exactly as the young man says. In the dictionary of the Spanish language it says that success is a word of Latin origin on exitus meaning ("Exit"), and the concept refers to the right effect or consequence of an action or of an enterprise. Its root is more or less obvious by the context in which we use this word as many times expressed "excel," "out above the competition" and "out of the darkness of anonymity".

He explains that success is a subjective and relative share, and is associated with the victory and gaining merit-based objectives.

How I personally interpret success is when we plan the goals we want in life, whether medium or large, and we succeeded. We accomplished our planned goal.

There are many who say that success is measured by the degree of satisfaction of having achieved a goal to my satisfaction. This is a feeling of success and accomplishment. It's a good internal feeling. This can only be described as a spiritual feeling.

Our commercial and materialistic society these days establishes a relationship between success and material wealth or fame and celebrity. This perception is distorted.  If you are not as famous as Justin Bieber or rich like Tiger Woods, then you feel unsuccessful.

Those who are not satisfied internally when they achieve a goal, however small, are likely to have problems in understanding how success works. Success leads to a state of satisfaction but does suggest greater responsibility, more organization, discipline and working  hard work without rest. Focus on the goal and the daily details and reinforce positive attitude.

I recommend to all those who do not believe in success, or who fear success defined targets. What do they want in their life ?, Where do they want to go once they know what they want. Face your obstacles to realizing those goals and overcome those obstacles. Work with determination on the rail leading to the conclusion of those goals.

Mauro Libi Crestani: Share value and social progress

“Shared value offers corporations the opportunity to utilize their skills, resources, and management capability to lead social progress in ways that even the best-intentioned governmental and social sector organizations can rarely match.” the above quote is from Mark Kramer.

A company like Nestlé, which pioneered the shared value movement, insists that it has been creating shared value since its precursor company was founded in 1866. Many companies would argue the same—and with some justification. years ago it was called corporate responsibility. Mark Kramer and Michael Porter advocated  the radical idea that companies that tackle social problems. They wanted a corporate revolution with the rallying call for companies to be "We all want to change the world".

Mark Kramer acts as a consultant helping corporations create shared value initiative for their company. He believes as his quote above says that corporations can create better social change than any government. This creates a win-win situation. Society gains by the kindness of the company involved in shred value and the company gains by the good will that it creates for itself.

Every country has its poor community. If corporations can be seen as a friend of the poor community by assisting and helping its communities, then private corporations win and will also profit. If corporations are seen as the enemy of the poor and of the environment, then those corporations will lose. We have seen this in countries where brutal dictators have created the public conception of the evil corporation and have taken over its private sectors of business. We have seen this in Cuba and Venezuela among many other companies. The poor communities have lost hope and its corporate entities have not assisted them, so they looked toward government to help them. Government can never do as well helping society as the private corporate world according to shared value initiative concept.

Mauro Libi Crestani: The negative attitude will not make any sales, it is time to change it

Reality is in the eye of the beholder. That is an old saying. You may love your spouse very much but unless they feel that love or perceive you as living them, then your reality is not the same as theirs. Their reality is what they sense. Another example, you know yourself to be a very caring patient about your company, your products and for your customers. But their reality may be that they do not feel that you really care, they do not sense that you would be there for them.  As a result, you may lose the sale from your customer, your boss may fire you or you get passed up for a promotion that you really deserve. In many of these cases it is all about your attitude. If you feel positive about yourself, other people will also. If you have a negative attitude then the people around you will fell that negativity and in turn be negative towards you.

There is an old story from India. Two shoe salesmen goes to India to sell shoes. The first salesman sees that no one wears shoes and he tells everyone that he meets that there really is no reason for them to wear shoes as it is not their culture. The other salesman tells everyone in India that he meets that India is entering the modern age and that they can be on the cutting age. Just check these shoes out. The salesman with the negative attitude will not make any sales and probably lose their job. The salesman with the positive attitude sees a whole new and open market.

Mauro Libi Crestani: The positive thinking effects

Norman Vincent Pearl in the 1950's wrote a book on positive thinking effects on your life in so many ways. He claimed that it would bring one more happiness and more success. He wrote that you could not be successful unless you believed that you had the ability to succeed. That positive thought created positive results.
The belief of positive thinking was met with a lot of controversy. Many believed that it was a type of self hypnosis. They believed that if a situation was bad or negative then you had a bad situation and that thinking positive was being delusional. They believed that you have to accept the facts for what they are. Thinking positive will not change anything.

Norman Vincent Pearl was not the first to believe that positive thinking can make real changes. Thousand of years ago in India, The Sulta of the Golden Light believed that negative thought was the delusion. There was the belief that bad health, poverty, misery, affliction, abuse, ill will and all things negative came from this delusion. They taught a belief in how to control this negative thought. The belief was to get control over your mind with meditation and your body with yoga. You needed to take care of your body and your mind. That you had full control.
The Indian ancient philosophy was the opposite of the critics of Mr Pearl. Mr Pearl's critics were that a positive attitude was a fraud, a denial of the true world and situation. The Sulta taught that negative thought was the delusion. That the true situation was positive. If we could just get rid of all the negativity then success was inevitable.

If we could control our thoughts, our anxiety and all our excuses why we need to fail, then we will be able to see that we have the power to succeed. It is in us all, it is the real reality. It's the negativity that stops us from believing and stops us from going forward on the path to success. Once we get rid of the reason that we create for us to fail, then success will happen.
